Chauhan Ale & Masala House, an unexpected pairing of Indian flavors with gastropub fare, opened in August at 123 12th Avenue North. The causal, 150 seater is the brainchild of executive chef and TV personality Maneet Chauhan and locally based North Gulch Hospitality Group. Chef de cuisine Vasisht Ramasubramanian is a recruit from Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s New York City empire.
Another chef bringing Indian-inspired flavors to the South is Food Network personality Maneet Chahuan. Opening in Nashville in September, Chahaun’s Ale and Marsala House aims to be a “British pub with Indian influences,” offering fusion fare in addition to a section of the menu dedicated to classic Indian dishes. The beverage offering will focus on custom beers, including flavors such as English toffee cayenne, a Chai porter, saffron cardamom and a garam masala spiced brew which they plan to partner with local brewer Cool Springs Brewery to create.

It’s almost difficult to believe that Maneet Chauhan, with her impressive resume, including her tenure as a judge on Chopped and her executive chef status at both Chicago and New York’s Vermilion.
At the end of the summer, she will be opening her first restaurant in Nashville, called Chauhan Ale & Masala House, which will open in Nashville’s Gulch neighborhood, and feature contemporary Indian food fused with the atmosphere of a gastropub. Her purpose? To show everyone that Indian food can be approachable.
Chauhan is whipping up a multi-course preview dinner at 7:30 p.m. tonight at POP Nashville (604 Gallatin Avenue, Suite 201). Diners can dig into such dishes as curried scallops pav bhaji (a mashed vegetable dish), kashmiri lamb shank and gajar halwa whoopee pie (Indian carrot pudding sandwiched in a saffron cardamom cake).

And today from Maneet Chauhan’s team comes a peek at an early interior rendering for the restaurant. The space has a modern, casual vibe, with a variety of seating including booths, tables and a large bar, as well as what looks to be more casual lounge-style seating.
